Maya’s SDSN Kids Bedroom Makeover

The Amazing Maya

Maya was born with a rare genetic mutation "KCNJ11,  DEND Syndrome" Developmental Delay Epilepsy Neonatal Diabetes. She is 4 years old of pure sweetness. She lives with her Mom and Dad "Jillian and Scott" and her big sister Bailey. We loved meeting Maya for the first time. She said hi to us a whole bunch and we got lots of hugs too. She was still a little unsure why we were there but so full of excitement at the same time. Maya showed us her room for us to check out the space we would be working with. One of her biggest struggles is communication but we got a lot of great feedback from her parent and especially from her big sister Bailey who told us everything Maya likes from pink princess goldfish to Frozen to Daniel Tiger, elephants, and her favorite color purple. BOOM!!! We have our theme...... Purple Elephant room😁

The Reveal

The reveal was so fun. The expression on Maya's face was shock at first then overwhelming excitement. What an amazing feeling watching her see her room for the first time. The funniest part is that she was more excited about the big purple bouncy ball than anything else. We had an amazing time and an awesome crew working on this bedroom makeover for this very amazing little girl.

Our Bedroom Makeover Plan

We wanted to do something interactive and something that would benefit her and her parents as well. Our friends at Hillbilly Bling had a new toy they wanted to try out which is a metal cutting machine. We were able to make a big magnet board and cut out some cute metal elephants that we glued magnets to and painted purple. We were also able to get two Alexa shows that we placed in Maya's room and her parents ' as well. With that, the parents are able to communicate with Maya while she is still in her room from their own room. They could also put Maya's favorite show Daniel Tiger on for her to watch at quiet time. We found a very cute low-to-the-ground trellis bed for Maya to climb in and out of easily. Maya loved to pull stuff out of her closet all the time so we built a barn door with a latch to it make less accessible for her to hurt herself. We added black-out curtains with stars cut out so when the sun shines in you could see stars on the walls and floor. The purple paint color we picked out is called "Magical" which is exactly how this room turned out and of course our signature box on the bed full of fun stuff for Maya and her family. We even had a box for Bailey to for all her help.
